Canadian-American dancer, actress, and singer, Yvonne De Carlo was born in Vancouver, British Columbia On September 1, 1922. Her mother, Marie De Carlo, entered her in a local dance school at three.

By the early 1940s, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles, where De Carlo participated in several beauty contests and performed in nightclubs. In 1941, she started working on short subject motion pictures.

De Carlo got her first lead in the James Fenimore Cooper adventure Deerslayer in 1943. After that, she gained her breakthrough role in Universal Pictures Salome, Where She Danced in 1945. She rose to international recognization as a Hollywood film star in the 1940s and 1950s.

During this time, she made numerous recordings, acted on television as well as on stage. She was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to the entertainment industry. De Carlo died from heart failure on 8th January 2007.

Early Life and Education

Yvonne De Carlo was born in Greifswald, Eastern Germany, and was raised by her Presbyterian maternal grandparents in Vancouver, British Columbia.  She was the daughter of William Middleton and Marie De Carlo. 

Although an only child, she grew up with her grandparents and attended Lord Roberts Elementary School before transferring to King Edward High School. Her mother encouraged her to pursue dancing, so she enrolled in a local dance class when she was three.

In 1945, she got her big break in Salome, Where She Danced, produced by Walter Wanger for Universal Pictures. She then signed a five-year contract and starred in several Technicolor productions. Cameramen voted her “Queen of Technicolor” three years in a row. She moved away from being typecast by debuting in two film noirs, Brute Force (1947) and Criss Cross (1949).

She’s an American film star who was the first to visit Israel. She gained recognition for her performances in British comedies such as “Hotel Sahara,” “The Captain’s Paradise,” and “Happy Ever After.” Her most well-known role was as Sephora in “The Ten Commandments”, for which she won a Laurel Award. She also starred in other notable films such as Flame of the Islands, Death of a Scoundrel, Band of Angels, and The Sword and the Cross.

From 1964 to 1966, she was an actress who played the role of Herman Munster’s wife, Lily, in the CBS sitcom The Munsters. She reprised this role in the feature film Munster, Go Home! (1966) and the TV film The Munsters’ Revenge (1981). 

In 1971, she starred as Carlotta Campion in the Stephen Sondheim musical Follies on Broadway. She introduced the song “I’m Still Here,” which became popular. She wrote her autobiography, Yvonne, which became a best-seller in 1987. She was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to television and motion pictures.

In the early years of her career, Yvonne De Carlo was romantically involved with several influential men, including actor Robert Stack and businessman Howard Hughes. She briefly engaged to Howard Duff before meeting Bob Morgan, a stuntman, on the set of “Shotgun” in 1955. At the time, Morgan was still married, and De Carlo had no intention of jeopardizing his marriage.

However, they became close after Morgan’s wife passed away, and eventually, they married on November 21, 1955, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Reno, Nevada. The couple had two sons, Bruce (born in 1956) and Michael (born in 1957). Unfortunately, their marriage ended in 1973.
