Amy Carlson was born on 7th July 1968, in Elmhurst, DuPage County, Illinois, near Chicago, and was raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Her father is Robert Eugene Carlson, and her mother is Barbara Jane. They both are school teachers by profession. She is of Swedish descent, with roots in Småland.
