It would appear this village now has about 1,000 supervisors:

Thanks for searching for that, Skyywise. Not sure why they didn't attribute the phrase to whoever said it unless it was just inappropriate journalistic opinion. The same goes for the headline.

Cheers, Michael. Makes you wonder how long it must take to see the monetary benefits of a promotion.

The wife has spent today on a heavy shopping spree with an accountant acquaintance who has been buying bribes, (sorry, I mean gifts), to help ease her from provincial level status to state level accountant. So far she has spent almost US$3000 on handbags, wines and clothes for various officials who need to give her the nod. They may be cracking down in beijing, but in Fujian it's business and bribery as usual.

As to why "nip corruption in the bud" is stated in quotes, my guess would be that it is a translation of a chengyu of some sort. I tried searching for it here: http://www.chinese-tools.com/chinese/chengyu/dictionary/search.html but nothing quite fit my poor attempts of searches.

What do you mean by the person who handles your complaint being the exact same person you want to complain about?

Another anti-corruption department? Damn! More people you've got to bribe.

The person who handles your complaint is the very same person you want to complain about? Excellent idea! Instant elimination of the problem.

Someone should write a book called "The coming collapse of Gordon C. Chang". If that collapse never happens, the writer will have achieved the same predictive success rate as his subject.
