Chris, the new blog will arrive eventually. Unfortunately, my choice of non-credit card payment has resulted in an unexpectedly long delay. I'll let you know when it finally goes online.

Chris: Ok I concede, you win!

Jay: Thanks for the link. The intro is quite amusing - manages to include all the things the Chinese government hates to talk about in one sentence.

Cat: Good point. Annoyingly, I can't remember the figure for U.S. casualties that was written next to the exhibit - think it was in the hundreds of thousands category but definitely not sure. By the way, how is the new Black and White Cat blog host coming along? Keen to start reading again ...

So the machine can make 5,000 loaves. But what about the fishes? In possible defense of the exhibition's figures for Korean war casualties, large numbers in Chinese are hard for inexperienced translators to handle on the spot, so the English version you were given may not have accurately represented what was really said. Tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands aren't big enough to be that difficult, but the possibility of translation error is still there.

This article by a Korean academic is a great example of the "decisive "scholarship that passes as incisive commentary on the Chinese military buildup in surrounding countries: http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2878796

"Look out Taiwan!"? When my former colleague and I were taken to the Long March anniversary exhibition he listed his occupation as CIA spy in the guestbook. I wrote nothing, just quickly hurried inside before anybody noticed. But actually, that exhibition was pretty cool, really. I also like the museum at Lugou Qiao, which even manages to include a section on the foreigners, and even the Japanese, who helped China during the war.
