the original wording was "principly ban off-campus renting" as I read from sina.com headline that morning, "principly" is the key here to imply the MoE never really meant to implement it in the first place, its also a infamous word used in chinese political discourse meaning "unserious".
funny isn't it? a ministry of the world's largest country officially published joke shit.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of this dormitory issue is that the Ministry of Education is happy to piss students off with archaic and patronising "ideological front" vocabulary even if it is just for show. If it had just said, "For your own safety", it probably wouldn't have grated as much.

There have been a couple more stories released by Xinhua on this, including a survey by China Youth Daily and Sina.com that said 93.3 percent of students believed the ban was "impractical and unenforceable".

Even if the ban is not enforced, a certain amount of damage has already been done through the public way in which freedom of choice has been removed.

My "foreign expert" colleagues and I just finished (and lost) a fight with our college to be "allowed" to live off campus. We are required to stay in the dorm during the week, they said. "For your safety". The students have my sympathies.

I doubt there is anything remotely significant about the dormitory comment - it just seems eye catching to us laowai because it gets imagining a return to some Cultural Revolution-esque nonsense.

At most it's just one of many departments looking to burnish its socialist credentials ahead of the Party Congress - but even that is a stretch.

I remember covering a localised version of the dorm living thing last year. It was a rule instituted by one or two universities in, I think, Chengdu, which sparked an on-campus riot. So that bodes well.

About a month later, a college in Guangzhou had to call in the cops to make students *leave* their dorm rooms - they'd graduated but reckoned that renting accommodation in the city was too expensive.

Bloody students, eh?

This dorm room story has had a bit of coverage in Western media (I'm fairly sure I spotted it in the Indie and somewhere else) but I'd wait for the 'political education' to start before it becomes interesting.

I agree that the 'dorm thing' is significant, which is why I also posted on it in my own blog. It's a small part of a much larger pattern, but it's a part that is easy to see, which is why I'm surprised more people haven't made note of it.

Anyway lah, good post (as usual).

Who isn't tired of this Chinese nonsense. If their spin was at least slightly palatable, then it wouldn't drive me nuts. But let's face it, the Chinese are so fucking boring in their obviousness, please give me the American bullshitters. PLEASE! At least they are entertaining.

My favorite harmonious phrase of the week was on Wednesday, which was National Maritime Day. According to the script I saw at work, the theme of the day's events was "building a harmonious ocean."

Great post. I think the dorm living thing might actually be significant, though I rather doubt it will ever be enforced.
